When Heaven Invades Earth by Jenna Benton

She sits across from me, sipping her Mr. Pibb, the sun shining in on her bubblegum pink hair. The last time I saw her it was purple. We’re chatting casually about the weather, her mom, my job; just catching up and warming up to what needs to be said.

I hear him coming up the aisle; a noisy little toddler holding a dirty plastic dump truck. He’s weaving back and forth in the aisle, making his way to the table where his parents have already taken a seat. He stops. He stops right at our table and looks up at my friend and her bubblegum hair and suddenly he’s pointing and smiling and hopping up and down.

This little Love has stopped at our table to absolutely delight himself in the color of a stranger’s hair. It’s different and delicious and bright and he stops in the middle of his wandering, not to laugh at her, but to delight in her.

And right then I see it; she’s smiling. Not a pasted on ‘I’m OK’ smile, but a real, genuine smile.

Oh, how my heart aches.

This little guy’s parents are embarrassed that he is making a scene, but I want to scoop him up and buy him lunch.

“…your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven…” These were some of the Fighting Words I heard this morning when I answered my phone and put it on speaker as I laid in bed, staring at the ceiling, wondering what my day was going to hold. Lindsay had asked a powerful question this morning..and it had been following me around until this very moment when I looked into this little boy’s face.

“What would it look like if Heaven invaded your day today?”

Up until this moment I had no idea. But THIS. This is what it looks like.

This girl. The last time I met with this girl she had purple hair and thought God was an a**hole. Today her hair is pink cotton candy and she insists He doesn’t even exist.

This girl, whose hand I traced last year for my journal so I can put my hand to hers and pray over her life. This girl, who has agreed to go to treatment and begin to learn what it’s like to live whole and healed and redeemed.

This girl, who sits in this booth across from me and just had a little taste of how heaven feels about her.

I just want to encourage you to check out FIGHTING WORDS. Not in a pushy, marketing way. But in a ‘This means something to me’ way.

And for today, think about letting heaven invade your day. You just might be surprised at what that looks like.
